Experience: To be honest I heard worse than my own experience. In a nutshell, it’s like any other specialty! The rounds start at 9 or 10 and finish at 11 or 12. One day per week you have to stay until 4 for H&P. Clinics are very hectic!
1- Rounds: Every day. You should come and take 2-3 patients to present. Starts at 9 or 10 and ends at 12 or 1. You have to come early to prepare and see the patients physically; I used to come at 8.
2- Clinics: After the rounds finish, you are free to attend the OR or clinics.
3- On-calls: 2-3 * Weekday on-calls are from 4 PM to 8 AM. Most teams had a pre- and post-call off; however, our team had to attend the pre-call rounds, so 24 hours in the hospital. You will be assigned to either wards or L&D. * Weekend on-calls are either 8 AM to 8 PM or 8 PM to 8 AM. You will be assigned to both wards and L&D. Please be aware of that since many interns didn’t know about it.
4- Admissions: * From each team, one person should stay until 4 to write H&Ps. * You can find a comfortable place to stay and call to check if there is any H&P or general consent for your team. * At 2:30 you can ask the nurses if they are expecting any admission. ER cases usually take an hour or more to arrive, so if there are no cases you can go. Don’t wait until 4 if you are sure no one is coming. If not, please stay because the on-call cases are many.
Disadvantages: The oncalls!!! You can’t even take 5 minutes break
Tips: Tips for Oncall: * It is very important for the one who is responsible for the admissions during the day to make sure that AlL the cases have H/P.. so the oncall will be less hectic for his/her colleagues * Make sure to write the note under IP not OP using admission format.. if u don’t your colleagues will have to rewrite it. * Make sure to Co-sign the MRP.. if u don’t, also your college will have to rewrite it. * Your role in the Oncall is to write H/P only. You will not have any brakes unfortunately.. to many cases!!
