Experience: A positive clinic-based rotation with teaching from fellows and consultants. Endocrinology clinics offered a wider range of cases, while diabetes follow-up clinics could become repetitive. First-visit clinics were particularly useful for taking a complete history and understanding referrals.
Advantages: Morning clinics run around 8:30–11:30 or noon, and afternoon clinics around 12:30–4. Interns are usually observers, but fellows may encourage them to take histories and present patients. On busy days, interns may be offered their own clinic with consultant approval.
Disadvantages: There are internal-medicine on-calls, usually two weekdays or one weekend. If you only observe in clinic, the work can become repetitive.
Tips: Attend consistently with a small number of consultants so they can assess your work. Ask to take histories and present patients; first-visit clinics provide the best practice.
